Things to see and do in Skanes
This comparatively small North African country has a fascinating history. Berbers started living here around 4000 BC and many other races have left marks. The Phoenicians founded Carthage in 814 BC, and the Romans destroyed it only to rebuild it as the capital of Roman Africa in 45 BC, when it became the third largest city in their empire.Today it is the most westernised and liberal of Arab nations and tempts with excellent accommodation in palatial hotels. It boasts wonderful sandy beaches, there are Sahara safaris and golf courses, shopping in the colourful markets is fantastic, the climate lovely, the ruins and other sights spectacular. The amphitheatre of El Djem is the jewel in Tunisia's crown. In Matmata people still live underground to escape the summer heat and a fascinating hotel there allows tourists to do the same for a night.Tunisia combines all the ingredients for a successful holiday, with history, glorious sunshine, superb beaches and lots of seasonal water sports and other activities. Golf is a major year-round attraction. Tennis, horse riding, cycling and trips into the desert are also popular.

4* Royal Miramar Thalassa - 7 nights - Half board basis
The large thalassotherapy centre means that this attractive hotel is a good place to stay at any time of year. Much of the accommodation is in several low-rise wings facing the sandy beach.Monastir, with its Ribat and Bourguibas Mausoleum, and Sousse are about 10 km away in opposite directions. Monastir airport is slightly nearer (it's not a problem) and the Palm Links golf course is virtually next door. The Royal Miramar Thalasso is a good choice for young and old, couples or families, who want to relax in pleasant surroundings and make only occasional forays to busier places. Amongst the many facilities are a splendid indoor pool, fitness room and supervised children's club. There is entertainment if desired, a good choice of eating and drinking options, an outdoor pool and a range of sports both on land and (seasonally) on the water.
